No, Mr. Priebus, I Don’t Think That’ll Fix It………

Mike Huckabee is a nasty, vile little man.  He is an attention whore.  The fact that he is from my home state of Arkansas is yet another strike against him, since he shines a very unwelcome spotlight on a very backward state.  He draws in criticism on all of us who live here, and in turn those of us who are trying to live Blue in a sea of Red have to cope with a multitude of slurs and insults everywhere we go, both online and in real life.  We do not need any more bad publicity, Mike.  We have too much already. He has nothing whatsoever of value to add to any public conversation, and has not been relevant in quite some time.  I loathe the man, and I abhor pretty much everything he stands for.  I wanted to be absolutely, sparkling, crystal clear about that.

So I could tell you this………..

As much as I dislike Huckabee, I am equally opposed to the GOP platform and ideology.  Very little that issues from the right of center these days manages to be anything other than totally offensive.  Even when you allow for the embellishments of hype in the media, it is clear that there is indeed a war on women, children, families, the middle & lower classes, the disadvantaged & disenfranchised, non-Christians of every and no faith & set of beliefs and non-beliefs, minorities, and pretty much everyone who is not an elite, upper class, older white male.  The strong denials from the GOP on this just highlight their fractured and problematic relationship with the wing-nuts who have taken over in recent years.

They say they want to buff up their image.  The RNC’s  chairperson Reince Priebus was quoted in an interview with the National Review on Friday, saying that Mike Huckabee should be “the model for the GOP on social issues such as marriage equality and abortion.”  This not only does not improve their image, it reinforces everything that is wrong with the party.  No matter what the PR folks for the GOP churn out to rehabilitate their tarnished facade, every time these guys open their mouths, the truth slithers out.

The truth ain’t pretty.

Oh, Canada…….

They receive humanitarian aid, which they clearly need…..but for goodness sake lets prevent them from attempting to be heard or recognized. Can’t have that.

National Post | News

OTTAWA — Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird has told a powerful pro-Israel lobby that Palestinians will feel “consequences” from Canada if they pursue the Jewish state at the International Criminal Court.

Baird issued the warning just as the federal government considers whether to end hundreds of millions of dollars in Canadian humanitarian aid to the Palestinians when it expires at the end of this month.

Baird delivered his message to an approving audience Sunday in Washington at the annual conference of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee.

Canada strongly opposed the Palestinians’ successful effort in November to win elevated status at the UN, and has warned them against using it to file an international legal complaint against Israel.

It has also opposed the Palestinian bid to win membership with the United Nations cultural organization, UNESCO.

Palestinian officials have said they would have no choice but to pursue Israel…

Why Am I A Liberal?

I have posted before today of the chain of events that led to my dissatisfaction with the Republican Party, especially the ultra Conservative set.

In a great many ways, my own departure from the Republican mindset and journey to Liberalism mirrors this woman’s story. Very thought provoking. I refer to myself as a recovering Stepford Republican nowadays.

http://thebigslice.org/why-i-am-no-longer-a-republican/

Not all who need a helping hand are there of their own choosing  or in a dire situation of their own making.  Even if they were, I would still want to help them.  I cannot in good conscience belong to any party or ascribe to any set of ideals based on the core of I, Me, Mine.

I care more about my own family  and then my own friends more than I do for the rest of the world.  Of course I do.  Who doesn’t?  I don’t want to see those I love or have connections with suffer or do without.

That doesn’t mean I am not passionate about trying to make this world a better place for everyone, and working to assure that everyone, everywhere, has enough for their needs.  Who wouldn’t want that?  What kind of person only focuses on their own needs to the total exclusion of everyone else?  Not me.  Not anymore.  I am no longer a Republican, and I reject them.

They are lost.

Well, Here’s Your Problem……..

Buried somewhere in the mystical rituals that must be traversed to attain Republican Party Representative status, there must be some version of a voir dire wherein the aspiring candidate must prove that he or she has never read George Santayana.  They are at it again, this time in the Ohio House Committee.

Ohio House Votes To De-fund Planned Parenthood

The moral of this story is much the same as any number of frustrating and irritating political stories we have seen over the last few years.

Remember the election, GOP?  Yeah, the proverbial ass kickin’ you just received?  I know you are all scrambling around pointing fingers in any direction but your own.  Pundits and analysts are trying to figure out what went wrong, and how your projected numbers could have been so wrong.

This is what went wrong, guys.  This is the type of legislation you seem obsessed with pushing through, and we all know that.  We learned that if we want the government out of our love lives and our bodies, most of y’all must go.  Y’all learned nothing.  You are still trying to wage a war on women.  We don’t like it.  If you don’t stop it, we will smite you.

A Few Thoughts On Post-Election Recuperation………

A friend just sent me a link to a truly sad and disturbing 24 minute breakdown in response to the election results.  I skimmed through the comment section prior to viewing it, like I usually do, just to see if there were any key things I should listen for, then hit start.  It took the best part of the morning to get through it.

Wow.

When I started posting my own thoughts online I had the quite natural fear that if I opened myself up to strangers, I would bring ridicule on myself.  I was new at blogging.  I was a recovering Stepford Republican turned Liberal.  Of course, being me, I decided p-fooey on it, and jumped in with both feet.  What I didn’t expect was to find myself enjoying it so much.  Feedback, whether good, bad, or indifferent, is endlessly interesting to me.  I have met some fascinating people, and gained some perspective I lacked after reading their blogs.  I am also endlessly awed by the quantity of talented, interesting, & humorous people blogging and posting nowadays.  Y’all so very often say exactly what I was thinking, but you just say it so darn much better.

That being said, I wanted to say three things to the world out there.

For my small circle of readers and commenters, thank you.  Y’all keep me coming back.  I post what I post because I believe in it, and I stand behind it, but having even one person who actually reads what I write elevates me from crazy cat lady pushing a wire cart and muttering to very, very amateur writer.  It’s a small distinction, but an important one to me.  As of this morning, I have yet to become an object of ridicule or major harassment, and thank you all for that, as well.  I have been fortunate in my freedom from trolls or cyber ugliness to any great extent.

For the unfortunate Nebraska blogger who has inadvertently become an object of lampooning and skewering humor…..I am sorry, ma’am.  You obviously believed very much in what you were doing, and you clearly put a lot of work and heart into it.  It goes without saying that I completely disagree with most of what you were working for, but respect is still possible even when disagreement exists.  I think you are wrong, but I also think those lambasting you aren’t much better.

For everyone, everywhere…….  I understand that many are still smarting from a vicious election cycle.  Even some outside the US were pulled in and became invested in the shenanigans and mud slinging.  The Conservatives have a great deal of work ahead of them if they want to tame and reclaim their party to make it a viable contender.  We need them to step up and do just that, because in its current state, the Republican party is a mess.  There was a good reason our founders wove checks and balances into our government.  It ain’t perfect, but it keeps the crazies from completely taking over.

Thank goodness for that, because the last few years we came perilously close.  We need more than one cohesive and functional party to represent us.  We need the discord, the arguments, the bargaining, and the pressure from others to compromise.  I understand the tendency of  some to poke fun at the losing end.  Call it schadenfreude, gloating, or the good old standard neener-neener, let’s get it out of our system quickly and extend a hand.  The sooner we stop trading insults, taunting, and anger, the sooner we can start working together with the rational folks in every party to cleanse our government of the remaining whack-a-doodles and obstructionists.

A Plea For Reason………

For those readers in the US, I have been watching media sites since last night, and I am disheartened by your unrelenting attitude of petulance and  hateful jibes.  I have something to say, directly to all of y’all…………

C’mon, guys. Can we wind up the self pitying, sad, apocalyptic, and frankly mean posts, already?

I have some news for you.

My president won. Not because of Latinos, although they helped. Not because of enlightened women, although we helped. Not because of those in favor of freedom of choice, religion, and true liberty (for everyone instead of one cherry-picked group), although they helped.

No one minority or special interest group did this. We did it together. We read, we watched, and we listened. We talked, blogged, and spread our message far and wide.

There was no conspiracy. There was no blackout. There was simply a very large segment of the population who wanted to move forward. We don’t want war. We don’t want to pay higher & higher taxes so that the insanely wealthy can pay an even smaller percentage than they do now. We want accountability. We want progress.

We want the right to live without being micromanaged, and we want the same right for everyone else….including those who are currently continuing to throw mud and vitriol at us.

No, we aren’t lazy. No, we don’t want handouts. We want a safety net, for ourselves, and for everyone else. We care about all of our fellow citizens. We want to cooperate, and we want to see bipartisanship.

Let’s do this. Let’s do great things for all of us and stop rolling in the mud.

My President is your President. He is OUR President, so let’s show him the respect he earned and deserves.
